The Anti-Rape Condom

Rape-aXe: The Anti-Rape Condom
Rape-aXe: The Anti-Rape Condom

This is so brilliant! An anti-rape female condom invented by Sonette Ehlers.…

A South African woman working as a blood technician with the South African Blood Transfusion Service, during which time she met and treated many rape victims.

The device, known as The Rape-aXe, is a latex sheath embedded with shafts of sharp, inward-facing microscopic barbs that would be worn by a woman in her vagina like a tampon.

If an attacker were to attempt vaginal rape, their penis would enter the latex sheath and be snagged by the barbs, causing the attacker pain during withdrawal and (ideally) giving the victim time to escape.

The condom would remain attached to the attacker’s body when he withdrew and could only be removed surgically, which would alert hospital staff and police. This device could assist in the identification and prosecution of rapists.

A medieval device built on hatred of men? Or a cheap, easy-to-use invention that could free millions of South African women from fear of rape, in a country with the world's worst sexual assault record?

Dubbed the "rape trap", trademarked "Rapex", the condom-like device bristling with internal hooks designed to snare rapists has re-ignited controversy over South Africa's alarming rape rate, even before plans for its production were announced in Western Capethis week.

Some say the inventor, Sonette Ehlers, a former medical technician, deserves a medal, others that she needs help.

The device, concealed inside a woman's body, hooks onto a rapist during penetration and must be surgically removed.

Ms Ehlers said the rape trap would be so painful for a rapist that it would disable him immediately, enabling his victim to escape; but would cause no long-term physical damage and could not injure the woman.

Some women's activists call the device regressive, putting the onus on women to address a male problem.

Charlene Smith, an anti-rape campaigner, said it "goes back to the concept of chastity belts" and would incite injured rapists to kill their victims.

"We don't need these nut-case devices by people hoping to make a lot of money out of other women's fear," Ms Smith said.

But Ms Ehlers contends that South Africa's rape problem is so severe women cannot wait for male attitudes to improve.

"I don't hate men. I love men. I have not got revenge in mind. All I am doing is giving women their power back," Ms Ehlers said. "I don't even hate rapists. But I hate the deed with a passion."

The United Nations says South Africahas the world's highest per capita rate of reported rapes - 119 per 100,000 people. Analysts say the total, including unreported rapes, could be nine times higher.

Ms Ehlers sees her invention as particularly attractive to poorer black women, because they often walk long distances through unsafe areas to and from work. She foresees women inserting the device as part of a daily security routine.

She said a majority of women surveyed said they were willing to use the device, which will go into production next year and sell for one rand (20 cents).

Ms Ehlers said she was inspired after meeting a traumatised rape victim who told her, "If only I had teeth down there."

Energy Healing

Energy Healing

Direct Line to the Divine

http://www.naturalstresscare.org/EnergyHealing.aspx

Good energy healing work is a practical application of spirit. This means the skill level and integrity of the healer is crucial.
There's no other way to put it. When the heart and soul of a well-cultivated energy healer are aligned with pure intention and the energy of the universe, god, the divine or the big whatever-you-want-to-call-it moves through healer and healed in a stream of blissful life force and pure spirit.
This is usually a very elevating experience. Although sometimes at first it can be a little rocky if we've engaged in a lot of denial.
Some energy healers can see auras and colors around the bodies of their clients; some feel things instead. It doesn't really matter how the healer works, as long as they're attuned and you're receptive.
Most schools of energy healing see energy problems falling into two main categories: blocked energy and drained energy. Physical disease will block energy; so will unresolved emotional and personal issues. Moving life force through these blocks opens things up and recharges what's been exhausted. When stagnant chi moves feelings may surface; being responsibly present for what comes up in response to these actions is one of the things a good healer does.
A number of forms of energy healing are taught in massage schools, Reiki being one of the most popular. Acupuncture and homeopathy are sometimes thought of as forms of energy healing, since they work with life force and not primarily through biochemistry.
Reiki has been shown to relieve anxiety and pain by relaxing patients and improving their sense of well-being.1,2 Professional nursing associations find energy healing techniques effective and support their use by nurses in the clinical environment.3 Positive results have been documented in pain management,4 pediatrics,5 and in a wide range of settings from acute care6 to the hospice.7

Many excellent energy healers are untrained and come to their abilities naturally. Perhaps it takes many lifetimes of cultivation to achieve the clarity, stillness and humility required to be a good channel for the divine. Others find mentors to guide and train them. Some would say that for healers who are not already naturally gifted, some kind of initiation or mentor-student transmission of the tradition would be a necessary foundation for the healer's work.

It's caveat emptor out there. Buyer beware. There's no licensing for energy healers. As in many matters of the spirit one person's miracle worker is another person's fraud. Good personal chemistry usually leads to good results, but not always. Some otherwise-excellent energy healers have huge charisma and fuzzy boundaries. If you feel drained or stressed after your energy healing session or if your healer's behavior makes your feel unsafe it's best to find another healer. A good healer will make you feel completely at home; a good session will leave you feeling light, refreshed and clear.

Epsom Salt - Soothing to Sore Muscles in the Bath Toxic to the Kidneys If Taken Internally

Soothing to Sore Muscles in the Bath
Toxic to the Kidneys If Taken Internally

by Duane Law, L.Ac.

 http://www.naturalstresscare.org/EpsomSalt.aspx

Having taught acupressure to massage therapists for years I have a lot of friends who do massage. From time to time one will call me when they've cut their finger (or foot) and it's becoming infected. I tell them to take a cup of hot Epsom salt solution and soak their finger (or whatever) in it for ten minutes every few hours. By an hour or two after the second soaking redness and swelling are usually much better. Epsom Salt soaks help cuts heal quickly and cleanly.
Epsom salt, magnesium sulphate, is cheap, available everywhere and amazing. It's one of the most versatile medicines I've ever found. Whenever I get emergency calls from someone with a cold, flu or superficial infection I send them to the drug store for a half gallon-sized cardboard carton of epsom salt.
But not for internal consumption. Epsom Salt is best used as a soak. People use it as a purgative when they're constipated, but vitamin C works just as well and isn't so dangerous. It's best not to drink epsom salt.

There's three ways I use Epsom Salt.

  • It's a nice wind-down at the end of a difficult day.

Magnesium relaxes muscle and nerve tissue. A good warm tub with a couple of cups of Epsom Salt and perhaps a few well-chosen oils can do wonders as a gear-shifter after a long, hard day.
  • As a soak for infected tissue on a hand or foot:

Heat water in a tea kettle and pour it into a cup or basin big enough to immerse the infected body part. Soak the extremity in the water (taking care not to scald yourself) and, as you get accustomed to the heat, add small portions of hot water from the tea kettle to keep the soak as hot as you can comfortably take it.

You only need to do this for 6-10 minutes each time. Frequency of application is much more important than duration; soaking over 10 minutes doesn't seem to accomplish anything extra. But soaking several times a day will almost always dramatically increase the treatment's effectiveness - I've only encountered one infection in ten years that didn't respond to it.1

  • As an aid to cure the common cold.

In a sense, the congestion of the flu can be seen as the body working overtime to take out the trash. The body clears itself of the debris of immune responses by flushing them out. Sweating is perhaps the most powerful yet dignified way of helping the body take out the garbage.

Just about anybody under 45 without a heart condition2 can get over any cold, flu or detox reaction in less than 24 hours if they repeat the following drill 3-4 times. Lay several large bath or beach towels in your bed where you sleep, and fold back the bedcover. Now fill a decent-sized bath with water just about as hot as you can take it, and pour in about 2-3 cups of Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate). Stir and dissolve the salt (do not drink!) Now immerse yourself in the bath. Get as much of your body underwater as possible, and if you have a head cold get as much of your head underwater as possible. Add more hot water as you become used to the temperature, and stir.

After five, six minutes or more (rarely more than eight) any part of your body still exposed to air will begin to sweat vigorously. Shortly afterwards your body will start giving you clear signals that it wants to get out of the water. Count to thirty (monitor your pulse and get out faster if it's racing) and then get out of the water.

The next sixty seconds are critical to the success of this process. Do not allow yourself to become chilled. Towel off rapidly and get into bed, pulling first new towels and then the blankets over you. Sweat. Sweat for at least 20 minutes; 30 or 40 is better. Your body is flushing itself. Warmth speeds lymph flow toward the heart. Heat is generally not good for microbes fighting off an immune attack.

When you're done, get up and rinse yourself off in the shower. You shouldn't let yourself get chilled this time, either, but after you're dry you can get dressed and go about your day. Drink some fluids. Drink some more. Repeat this cycle every 2-3 hours. It's a rare flu that will survive three or four rounds of sweating, although it may take you a day or two afterwards to regain your normal strength.

IMPORTANT CAUTIONS:

  1. There are staph and fungal infections that can worsen if soaked in hot water. These are fortunately rare. In most cases topical epsom salt soaks are very helpful for topical infections; so effective in fact that the first soaking should produce a noticeable decrease in pain and inflammation within an hour or two. The reduction in inflammation typically becomes dramatic after the second soaking, which can take place later the same day. If soaking worsens an infection, do not repeat and see a professional immediately.

  2. Heating the body can damage a weakened heart and possibly provoke a medical crisis. If you are older than your late forties, if you have a heart condition or a history of heart problems in your family; and especially if you fall into any of these categories and haven't had a physical lately, please get one and get clearance from your physician before attempting this method.

What Are Negative Ions?

What Are Negative Ions?

When atoms, which are generally understood to be the smallest unit of matter, cluster together in groups of two or more, they become molecules. A molecule can be changed by energy from things such as the sun or the movement of water. This energy can essentially push a negatively charged electron particle out of the molecule, leaving it with more positive protons than electrons. The extra proton turns it into an ion with a positive charge. An electron that was pushed out may attach itself to another molecule, giving it a larger number of electrons than protons, and turning it into a negative ion.
The difference between an ion and a molecule is the type of charge. Atoms and molecules are neutral, having a balance of positive protons and negative electrons. When that balance shifts, molecules become either positive or negative, depending on whether there are more protons or electrons after the change. Ions do not form on their own, but are created by the effect of some type of energy upon a molecule.
One major source of the energy that creates ions is the sun's radioactivity. Electricity, friction, an open flame or another source of heat all create the type of energy that can produce ions. Negative ions are generally produced in large numbers in situations where water evaporates, so the air after a rainstorm will typically be rich in negative ions. The air before a storm, however, will often contain many more positive ions than normal, thanks to the dropping pressure and its effect on the oxygen molecules.
Negative ion therapy is a popular alternative treatment today because some evidence suggests that an atmosphere filled with negative ions is better for health and well-being. Positive ions are produced by such things as electronic devices and those that use radio frequency, including cell phones and television sets. Naturally occurring winds can pull electrons from molecules, creating positive ions. The same phenomenon can occur in air pushed through a heating or cooling system in a home.
Studies through the years suggest that positive ionization of the air can increase feelings of anxiety and have other negative effects. On the other hand, negative ionization of the air is believed to have the opposite effect. Indoor spaces, in city areas where there's little vegetation and a lot of pollution from traffic — and anywhere heating or air condition is running — generally have low or non-existent levels of negative ions. These places typically have high concentrations of positive ions instead.
Nature produces negative ions in high amounts, largely from evaporating water and sunlight. The faster the water is moving and the more of it that hits the air, the higher the concentration of negative ions will usually be. Amounts of negative ions near waterfalls, for instance, is extremely high, and areas near bodies of water such as rivers and oceans is also rich with them.
Negatively charged ions may help people feel more at ease and promote good health, which explains the popularity of things such as negative ion generators and other gadgets. Likewise, the sense of well-being many people feel after a rainstorm is believed by some to be caused by the high concentration of negative ions in the air as the water beings to evaporate. Additionally, a negative ion inhaled with other oxygen molecules may help oxygen to be more easily absorbed into the body and, in turn, create that sense of wellness, though many experts disagree on whether there is any true benefit.
Even among those who believe that negative ionization of the air can be healthy, there is general agreement that not everyone will benefit. Only some people seem to be sensitive to the beneficial effects. It is also important for someone who purchases an ion generator to make sure that the device does not produce ozone in high amounts, especially if he or she suffers from asthma or other breathing problems.
